A tip on insulation for your yurt
We use polyurethane closed cell foam for insulation in your yurts. It comes in large rolls and is often
used for shipping material for others. It comes in ¼ “ & ½ “ thickness and it seems to work well
for us in the yurts.
I know that this sounds odd but we have experimented with other insulation from hardware stores. The insulation is aluminium with small bubble wrap inside for a thickness of about ¼”. We used it for 2-3 years, however, we discovered from the “Teen Yurt” and now just recently once more our 20 ft yurt. The insulation seems to “dry rot “ in between the two vinyl walls of the yurt. It just starts to crumble and flake off leaving only a mess on the floor of the yurt against the wall.
Note: Our yurts are not always heated throughout the whole winter and could get moisture inside during the wet & cold seasons. When a yurt isn’t heated or have a dehumidifier in it, it could cause some condensation with in the yurt. This could be the cause of the insulation reacting the way it did.
Nevertheless, we decided to seek other solutions for heating and came upon the polyurethane closed cell foam for the yurts. It seems to do a good job and it is holding up quite well after a couple of years of testing it.
I am not saying that commercial insulation cannot be used for yurts. We have just decided that our
discovery through trial and error has shown us another alternative and it seems to work for us.
